Is Iodine the New Chlorine?

According to C|Net News.com, an Australian compnay is replacing chlorine in water with iodine and using it to wash fruits and vegetables before they get shipped to grocers.  Iodine kills the microbes on the food and extends the foods’ shelf life.  So if I eat Twinkies (preservatives for my insides) and wash in iodine can I increase my shelf life ?
